My Meeting Abroad

Early members of Narcotics Anonymous were willing to go to any lengths to stay clean—creating meetings from scratch and sometimes driving hours just to connect with others in recovery. They built this fellowship on persistence, hope, and community.
Today, we are fortunate to have meetings available every day, often close to home. I never fully appreciated this until surgery kept me housebound for over a month. I dreaded the idea of being without meetings. I had heard of Zoom meetings, but they seemed odd and impersonal to me. Could I really find connection through a screen?
Finally, I took a leap of faith. Instead of waiting for an in-person meeting, I decided to join one in a place I had never been—New Haven, Connecticut. I clicked the link, entered the meeting, and was welcomed just as warmly as if I had walked into a local room.
That day, I made friends across the country. More importantly, I realized something profound: no matter where I am, I can always find addicts like me, sharing their experience, strength, and hope. The format didn’t matter—the fellowship did.
If you’ve never tried a Zoom meeting, I encourage you to step outside your comfort zone. Recovery knows no borders, and neither do our meetings. We are never alone.
