I went to my first NA meeting in July 1992 and, by the grace of God, I am still clean today. I stay on this path through sponsorship, meetings, service, and my Higher Power.

Early in my recovery, I began attending meetings regularly and got a sponsor. She suggested I join the Activities Committee, which she chaired at the time. I got involved for the first few years, and it helped me meet people and feel like I was a “part of” and truly belonged.

Later, she encouraged me to explore PI and H&I. Both became meaningful parts of my journey, and I have stayed involved with them on and off throughout my recovery. After completing my Fourth and Fifth Steps, my sponsor told me it was time to sponsor others—another form of service that I continue to this day. It fills my heart with love, joy, and at times, some sadness.

I also tried area service, but found that it brought out my control issues, so I stepped back. I’ve come to believe that everyone has to find their own place within the recovery structure.

I served on the Convention Committee for about seven years, where I met even more people and found great joy in that work. As I’ve gotten older, the long days have become more difficult, so I’m no longer involved at that level—but I’m grateful for the time I had there.

I believe being of service to others is part of the lifeblood of Narcotics Anonymous—it certainly has been for me. I will continue to serve in whatever ways I can, for as long as I am able. I love NA and am deeply grateful for the beautiful life I have found through recovery, service, the fellowship, and my Higher Power.
